When it comes to exploring a new place, there is nothing like having the freedom to go wherever you want at your own pace. My husband and I had the pleasure of exploring the picturesque Mae Hong Son Loop on our Road King Harley Davidson, it was one of the most exhilarating experiences of our lifes. With winding roads, stunning mountain views, and charming backdrops – this region has everything a motorcyclist could ask for. In this blog post, I will share our tips for those who are planning to explore the Mae Hong Son Loop.
Thailand is known for its beautiful beaches, ancient temples, and vibrant nightlife. But beyond the touristy hotspots lies a hidden gem – the Mae Hong Son Loop. Nestled in the mountains of Northern Thailand, this 600-kilometer and 1864 curves loop takes you through stunning scenery, beautiful hillside villages, and winding roads that are a motorcyclist’s dream.
Day 1- Chiang Mai to Pai
Our trip started in Chiang Mai, we took Highway 107 towards Mae Rim and then turned right onto Route 1095 which is the famous Mae Hong Son Loop. The distance from Chiang Mai to Pai is approximately 131 km and there are over 762 curves on this scenic route.
The road leading to Pai is full of twists and turns, with scenic views of the mountains on both sides. We stopped at a few viewpoints along the way to take pictures and enjoy the natural beauty. We also made a pit stop at a roadside vendor for some delicious Thai street food. We arrived in Pai in the early evening, where we spent the night at a local guesthouse.
Day 2- Pai
Our second day in Pai was all about exploring the town’s attractions.
Day 3- Pai to Mae Hong Son
We woke up early and after breakfast, we hit the road towards Mae Hong Son. The ride was smooth and the scenery was absolutely stunning. The distance from Pai to Mae Hong Son is approximately 108 km, and there are over 600 curves on this picturesque route.
We passed by small villages, farms, and rice paddies. We also came across a few temples that were worth stopping for. We reached Mae Hong Son in the evening and we spend the rest of the evening by the Mae Hong Son Lake, enjoying the beauty of Wat Chong Klang and Wat Chong Kham reflecting on the tranquil waters. The two temples, with their ornate designs and golden spires, are a must-see attraction in Northern Thailand and the perfect backdrop for a relaxing and unforgettable evening.
Day 4- Mae Hong Son to Mae Sariang
The fourth day of our Northern Thailand adventure took us on a scenic road trip from Mae Hong Son to Mae Sariang. Our day in Mae Sariang was spent by the tranquil riverside, where we discovered numerous local restaurants and bars.
We stayed at the Riverhouse Hotel (The Teak House), a beautiful establishment that had even hosted the Swedish royal family many years ago. We were impressed by the hotel’s classic teakwood decor and the peaceful atmosphere.
Day 5- Mae Sariang to Chiang Mai
Our final day was a long ride back to Chiang Mai, but we took our time and made couple stops along the way. We stopped at the Doi Inthanon National Park, which is the highest mountain in Thailand. The park has several attractions, including waterfalls, temples, and nature trails. We arrived back in Chiang Mai in the evening, feeling exhilarated and grateful for such an amazing experience.
