We have always been fascinated by the distinct cultures and traditions of different countries. One country that has always been on my bucket list was Myanmar (previously known as Burma). When I finally had the chance to visit Yangon, I could not contain my excitement. Little did I know that I would be one of the last people to visit the country before it closed down due to the military coup. In this blog post, I will share with you my incredible experience in Yangon, Myanmar.
Shwedagon Pagoda
Our first stop was at the Shwedagon Pagoda, which is considered one of the most sacred Buddhist pagodas in Myanmar. The gilded stupa glimmered in the bright sun, and I couldn’t stop staring at the intricately carved statues that adorned the temple. We wandered around the temple complex, and I was in awe of the peaceful and spiritual atmosphere around us. It was a truly humbling experience to witness the devotion of the locals towards their religion.
Karaweik Palace cultural show
Later, we attended the Karaweik Palace cultural show, which featured traditional dance performances. A traditional dance troupe welcomed us with applause and provided us with a brief history of the performance. The dancers’ graceful movements left us in awe, and we couldn’t help but applaud each performance. It was an incredible night of cultural immersion and exploration.
Sole Pagoda
Our next stop was at the Sole Pagoda, which is the only surviving pagoda in Yangon’s downtown area. Unlike the grandeur of the previous temple, the Sole Pagoda was small but striking. The turquoise tiles that cover the Pagoda’s exterior contrast sharply with the brilliant gold color of the decorative ornamentation. I was amazed to learn that the temple’s intricate design had been preserved since the 15th century.
Conclusion
Our journey to Yangon left a significant impact on our perspective on life and travel. The country’s spiritual essence, historical beauty, and cultural traditions mesmerized me. It’s daunting to imagine that the country is currently undergoing political turmoil, but we can only hope that it recovers soon.
